Exploring microbes. Rethinking period care.
A sanitary napkin concept incorporating microbes, with two aims: supporting vulvar wellbeing and helping its materials degrade. Both are still research questions.
What could microbes make possible?
Two questions guide the idea. Both need careful research.
Neither has a proven answer yet.
A research aim. Not a tested benefit.
Could microbes support vulvar wellbeing?
Explore whether microbial approaches could support the health of the external genital area. This starts with understanding the organisms, their role, and the safety questions involved.
Which microbes, and what would they do?
The strains, incorporation method, and timing of microbial activity have not been determined. Specialist guidance and safety assessment would be needed before any benefit could be established.
Working in research or manufacturing? Let’s talk ↗
Meet Afnan Alam Promi.
A student exploring what biology could bring to menstrual care.
Promi studies microbiology at North South University in Bangladesh. Cleancycle brings her interest in menstrual health together with a question about the role microbes might play in wellbeing and materials.
Her project idea was selected for the Millennium Fellowship. She is now seeking the knowledge, guidance, and collaborations needed to develop it responsibly.
Explore ways to work togetherFellowship selection recognises the idea. It does not establish product validation or endorsement by the fellowship organisers, NSU, or the United Nations.

Better questions, together.
Where research insight and manufacturing experience could help shape the next steps.
Before there’s a prototype.
The materials, microbial roles, and design decisions that still need to be explored.
Where the idea begins.
The starting question behind Cleancycle, and the two research ambitions it brings together.
Sketches, design concepts, and public documents will be added as they become available. These opening notes explain the idea; they do not report tested results.
Bring your perspective.
The idea is early. The invitation is open.
Here’s where your experience could help.
Research guidance
Help refine the scientific questions, explore microbial roles, and identify appropriate safety and performance assessments.
